Llanfair Caereinion

The Cloverlands Museum's new home

Llanfair Caereinion (Llanfair) is a charming market town on the River Banwy, eight miles west of Welshpool, Powys. It is the hub of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway which has run a heritage railway for sixty years with great success.

The town has its own secondary school and a population of about 1800 including the immediate neighbourhood. St.Mary’s Church, Llanfair Caereinion, derives from ‘the church of Mary at the fort of Einion’, and the town itself is built on the site of a Roman Fort.

The town has three public houses – the Red Lion and the Black Lion, as well as the Goat Hotel, all providing food together with a fish and chip emporium, Spar and Londis garage.

Most residents are involved in farming, construction or tourism – particularly caravan parks and bed and breakfast accommodation.

There is a picturesque riverside walk from the heritage railway (www.wllr.org.uk) from the station and adjacent Cloverlands Model Car Museum into the town – a pleasant fifteen-minute stroll.

The town is an attractive place to stop midway between the Midlands and Snowdonia and the Cambrian coast.
